Recently, after installing Ubuntu in a virtual machine, I noticed that file associations did not work in the file manager. I experimented for a while and didn’t find any obvious fix. I considered just using Nautilus, but I don’t like Nautilus as it seems very slow for me. Also, I’ve become annoyed with constanly selecting what application to use to open a file each time I click on one. Usually, I have one application I like to use with each file type and would rather just double click on the file.

This led me to search for alternate file managers and I happened across Xfe (X File Explorer). Xfe is a simple file manager which looks very much like Windows Explorer. Not a lot of features but very easy to use. I already use Gnome Commander much of the time, bit I thought Xfe might be a good choice when just trying to view videos, extract archives or just browse. I decided to install it.

Once I verified that I had fox-1.6.xx and fox-devel-1.6.xx installed (available with Package Manager in Applications – Add/Remove Software) I downloaded Xfe here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/xfe/ and built an rpm with:

rpmbuild -ta xfe-1.32.tar.gz

Once that completed I installed with:

rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/xfe-1.32.1-1.i386.rpm

Xfe is found in Applications – System Tools once installed.

Even easier in Ubuntu, Xfe was found with the Synaptic Package Manager and installed easily from there.

Right away I noticed how simple it is to associate a file type with a program. No need to look through settings or depend on your system, just right click on a file, select “Open With”, enter a program name and check ‘Associate’. Now that file type will automatically open with your selected program.

Xfe seems to work great for simple file browsing. If you just want to click through some videos or look through your files. you might want to give it a try. To check out Xfe, go to their site: http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/index.php?page=home
